En Route to Ubud
Cocktail culture in Bali is becoming increasingly sophisticated, with many “hidden” speakeasies popping up. But some, like the bar at Apéritif Restaurant, have a very traditional feel, evoking a colonial gentlemen’s club with its dark wood and leather furnishings. The well-suited bartenders craft their drinks, elevated into an art form, in measured and masterful movements, capturing the panache of the venue.
Apéritif Bar lately launched menu, named “Cocktail Anthology,” pays tribute to the eminent figures of Bali’s 30s evoking the grandeur and excitement of the era, when artists and academics foreign visitors were attracted to the island for its exotism, a life that is different and exciting, and beautiful surroundings. Bold, Fruity, Creamy, and Spirit Forward are the 4 variants of the new concoction selection crafted by head mixologist, Panji Wisrawan. His cocktail-making approach follows the same perfectionist philosophy that drives Chef Nic Vanderbeeken’s food culture, and you can experience all that at this exceptional cocktail menu.
The Tramp inspired by Charlie Chaplin is a beautiful blend of Plantation Dark Rum, Cynar (an Italian bitter made from 13 herbs and plants), Black Rice Wine, Coconut, Pandan, Jackfruit and Makrut Lime Leave. The Illustrator is another tour-de-force of creativity. This one is praising Miguel Covarrubias, a Mexican-American painter whose portrayals of Balinese women helped highlight Bali’s culture and make it discovered to the Western world. The cocktail is made out of Herradura Plata Tequila, Selaka Ning Arak (a Balinese spirit made of snake fruit), Kretek (cloves) Curacao, Cashew Atole, Orgeat, Soursop and Guava.
There are lots of great creative drinks to choose from on this new menu, but these are 2 of my favourites. For the others (The Prince of Ubud inspired by Tjokarda Gde Agung Soekawati, The Artist in homage to Rudolf Bonnet, The Philanthropist honours Barbara Hutton or The Dancer for Berryl De Zoete admiration), I leave it to you to discover them for yourself. There are also plenty of excellent options in the Classic section like the Nightshade Negroni, or the Hotsy Totsy for instance, or in the Fraternity section offering mixtures from other mixologists such as the Café Negra from Jesse Via or Adrian Besa’s Nomadic Forager.
Apéritif Bar is the perfect place for a drink before or after dinner, whether you want something strong to help you get through the Monday blues or a nice drink for date night to make a lasting impression. You won’t be disappointed with what Apéritif Cocktail Bar has to offer, so drink responsibly and have fun!
